Amy Only

Born to a lower middle-class family, Amy had a fairly average upbringing in a small town in the Florida panhandle. While she never excelled in any given school subject, she devoured books voraciously - from classic fiction to young adult novels to instruction manuals to history texts to the backs of shampoo bottles. She didn't really thirst for knowledge as much as she was just plain bored. The introduction of a computer and AOL 2.0 into her household during middle school merely supplemented her weekly trips to the library, as well as slowly teaching her to broaden her perspectives and showing her glimpses of the world that existed beyond the state line. Television and books about far away places were all well and good, but speaking to someone who had experienced it firsthand was real in a completely new and novel way.

In her sophomore year of high school, she noticed her senses getting sharper - uncomfortably so. It took quite a while to get used to, and retreating to the peace and quiet of the library/her bedroom/the woods became her only relief. Compared to lots of young mutants, Amy's awakening started gently. If things had ended there, she might've graduated high school, perhaps gone to community college, maybe gone on to a normal life.

But one morning in the summer just before her junior year, she woke up to find her teeth falling out. And her fingernails. And her hair. And while they all grew back within a month - her teeth were now serrated fangs, her hair was stark white, and her fingernails were black, razor-sharp claws. Her pale blue eyes faded to purple-ish, and then to pink. Her skin, which had always been on the fairer side to begin with, bleached to a ghoulish white. Sunshine became a real problem for her - or it would have, if she ever left the house.

Rather than face the reactions of the people she'd grown up with, rather than find out if they would still treat her as Amy and not a monster, she left home in the dark of an autumn night. She fell in soon after with a small group of other mutants, most of whom were much more grotesquely altered than she herself was. It was strange to suddenly be the 'beauty' of her social circle.

Riding the rails eventually took her to the west coast, where she worked what few odd jobs she could score and fell in with all kinds of people. She wandered like that for almost six years. A nearly year-long stay in a north Californian mutant-anarchist camp taught her more practical skills - an even greater sense of self-sufficiency, and the ability to eat just about anything without getting sick.

Leaving the group in spring of 2016, she made her way east, interested in seeing New York City and the northeastern parts of the country for the first time. She's been living underground ever since, making a home among the homeless and acting as a de facto community organizer when it suits her. She coordinates with the local chapter of Food Not Bombs and other grassroots coalitions to make sure that people who can't make it topside still get the food, clothing, and supplies they need.

Recent Events

Amy is generous when it suits her whims, studious, and philosophical - with a mild dose of paranoia on top. The Mutant Registration Act feels like a noose waiting to tighten around her neck - she read about the Holocaust as a child, and she feels like she's watching the beginning of it unfold all over again. While her more philanthropic actions are done with good intent, she's also self-aware enough to know that they're also going to bring her goodwill from her community. Goodwill equals a certain amount of safety from the authorities and certain terrorist organizations - should any of them follow her down into the tunnels.

Mellow when she feels safe. Agitated and prone to lashing out or running when dragged out of her comfort zone. Will use her teeth and claws to intimidate aggressors first, and will not hesitate to throw down if she's backed into a corner. Her time with the anarchist enclave bent her towards active self-preservation rather than passive acceptance.

She craves knowledge and experiences, preferring to lean on the wisdom of others when a unique problem comes along. The advice of an experienced friend is preferred over the more general information from a book or the internet. Since she has no career and is divorced from the general flow of 'normal' life, she's able to take her time coming to a conclusion in most matters. Even beyond her more immediate reasons for cooperating with others, Amy likes to think she's considered a valued member of her society and always looks for opportunities to make herself useful or her opinion heard. She wants to be thought of as someone who can be counted on to do the right thing.

Character Sheet

Heightened Senses=All of Amy's senses are greatly heightened compared to a normal human. She has nightvision (though cannot see in total darkness) and has excellent distance sight. She can hear a whisper in the next room, and can use her sense of smell about as well as a bloodhound. Taste and touch are likewise extra sensitive - bland food tastes pretty great to her, and her fingertips in particular would be sensitive enough for old-fashioned safecracking should she ever feel like learning.

Pointy=Amy has a set of ten claws instead of fingernails, and a self-replacing set of serrated fangs. She's never found anything capable of trimming or injuring her claws, but they also don't seem to grow. Her teeth, on the other hand, can fall out or be knocked out but will swiftly regrow any that are lost.
