It would be easy to say that all of Bruce's adult life hung on the actions of one mugger outside of Monarch Theater when he was a young boy. However, the rise of Batman did not rest solely on the actions of that criminal. A lonely child, Bruce had few friends before his parents' murder and certainly less afterward. His one constant and unwavering companionship was in the form of Alfred Pennyworth - his legal guardian. Had he more friends or other outlets in order to assuage his loss, Bruce might have channeled his rage and grief into other avenues. Instead, it laid the groundwork for Batman.

Left to his own devices, he dwelled on his parents' murder, slowly but resolutely coming to one conclusion: justice must be done. If the Gotham Police were unable to do it, he would take up the mantle himself.

As might be expected from an angry yet naturally brilliant student, Bruce acted out. He never learned to trust others and instead relied only on himself. To Alfred's dismay, he started to run away from both private and boarding schools. He would get into fights, stand his ground and then either simply disappear from his classes or was asked to not return after single semesters.

Instead of classes, Bruce honed his own form of study. He sought out masters of all sorts: martial arts, boxing, detective work, mechanical engineers, biology. Using his inheritance, he traveled the world and learned whatever he could from people he thought were far more useful than professors at the Sorbonne or at Cambridge. Eventually, he fell in with the League of Shadows. There, he learned quite a lot about hiding in plain sight as well as the quietest and swiftest ways to take down his enemies. It was there that he learned that despite his anger at the murderer of his parents, he was not willing to cross the line into taking a life himself.

Bruce escaped the League, traveling for a few more years around the world until he felt the pull of his original calling. Returning to Gotham, he resumed his position of CEO at Wayne Enterprises and started to establish himself in society. Then, using his considerable wealth, he started to outfit himself with retrofitted and entirely new designs and take on the criminals of Gotham.

The Legend of Batman started to rise and even more stranger criminals started to emerge to try and take on the Bat. With an iron determination, Bruce never wavered from his mission. Not even with the loss of teammates and family, not even in the face of overwhelming odds. The Batman will protect Gotham no matter what and therefore, that is what he does.

With the expanded and pointed look at vigilantism, Batman works as he does best - in the shadows. However, he refuses to leave Gotham undefended. He still defends the night and teaches those who he has brought under his wing to do the same. However, he is not quite as free to do so. The Bat Signal has gone cold.

Recent Events

As one might assume from a man who has shaped his life in the image of vengeance he envisioned as a young boy, Bruce does not form attachments easily. He is a man who has a single minded goal and a very firm idea on how it can be accomplished. That is not to say he cannot cooperate with others - he is a smart man and realizes that oftentimes foes and challenges must be faced together for there to be any hope of success. However, that does not mean he ever trusts the people with which he surrounds himself. In fact, most of Bruce's actions and decisions are meant to keep himself separate and above those he feel the need to protect.
