Black Panther

T'Challa hails from the wealthy and isolationist African monarchy of Wakanda, firstborn amongst two other siblings to the Wakandan king T'Chaka, descendant of Bashenga. His mother, N'Yami, died in childbirth, and he was largely raised by his stepmother, Ramonda, for the first few years of his life.

Though even his early life was marked with scandals such as the disappearance of his stepmother, T'Challa was nevertheless raised and groomed to be a future king, taught never to show fear or feel, to always reserve and exercise wisdom. The nation's strongest taught him in every fashion and form.

Wakanda was and is in many ways a fierce nation, only respecting the exemplary spirit. T'Challa was made to perfect himself in both body and mind, learning complicated concepts of science, politics and the arts at an age when most children were learning their first video game. He was sent on soujourns as a youth in the wilderness, with only skill and the luck of the Panther God to
rely upon for his survival. This was to develop leather skin and quick judgment.

The times of Wakanda were changing as he grew, however. Slowly, King T'Chaka had seen his son grow and flourish to his limits, and as the global theatre evolved, so did T'Chaka's sensibilities. As part of T'Chaka's flirtation with bringing Wakanda out of isolation, he sent his son to study abroad, a privilege few other Wakandans possessed. T'Challa studied physics at Oxford, but the academic and comparable social success he experienced there had earned him enemies, chief amongst which was his own best friend.

There, T'Challa learned the ramifications of decisions made. His life was laid out neatly for him—eventually he would come of age, and take the mantle of king. He would battle for the right to be Wakanda's greatest warrior, the Black Panther. He would be strong and wise, and never surrender to excess. Or so he would have come to think.

Since then, T'Challa has taken up the mantle of warrior, and some time later, the mantle of warrior king. But he has had to watch his best friend turn against him and fall to hate. He has had to watch his own father killed in cold blood. He has watched men and women invade Wakanda, to plunder her lands for the rumored treasures of the golden city. He has heard whispers at the very edges of his nation that he is a pacifist, orphan king with no teeth. He has seen the shadows that lay beyond, threatening even those under his rule who would decry the authority of kings.

No matter his personal feelings, he is driven to act.

Recent Events

T'Challa is not by his own measure a diplomat. He is the newest king of an isolationist culture, and heir to a warrior's bloodline. Where others may know to talk, to soothe and to make light, these come second to him. The Panther only knows to stalk, to hunt and to inflict the darkest censure on his country's enemies.

Every year he has lived, he has lived to exemplify the Wakandan spirit, a country that has never bowed to anyone other than its king and its god. Despite his academic accomplishments and leaning, he is deeply connected to his country, to his people, and to his honor, with little interest in anything else.

Though deeply prideful, he struggles with the nature of morality and the needs of one country over one world. They say he is a man cut from stone, but his heart beats fiercely, and his will is done up in iron bands.

He disapproves of wanton killing, but Wakandan justice is swift and with few mercies left at the table for evil. Since the murder of his father and the theft of valuable ores from Wakanda, he has been at cross-purposes with his honor and his reason. He has realized the grave threats Western machinations and hubris pose to his country. These are excesses that a warrior king can no
longer overlook.

Character Sheet

While not a particularly pious man by nature, T'Challa has through his ingestion of the Heart Shaped Herb seen the gods that oversee Africa, including the pantheon of orisha that watch over Wakanda in particular. As Black Panther, contingent on his character, T'Challa is in very literal possession of the divine right to rule, having the Panther Goddess' blessing to be guardian of Wakanda.

To an outsider, Wakanda may merely be 'vibranium' or 'technology,' but a country cannot be only one thing. In the metaphysical realm, T'Challa has extraordinary willpower and awareness. While this at its surface means it is almost impossible for telepaths to superficially read his mind, on a deeper basis it means that T'Challa can convene with Bast and the spirits of kings and heroes long past to receive guidance. Those who try to possess his body or annex his soul will realize he is being protected by spirits much greater than himself.

Having undergone the spiritual and martial rites to become the Black Panther of Wakanda, T'Challa is one of the strongest men alive in Africa. The ritual for creating the country's Black Panther is a process that has been perfected through thousands of years, creating a single perfect warrior to buttress the nation against all foreign invasion, and lead the realm in times of great strife.

The herb at the center of this ritual is the Heart Shaped Herb, native to Wakanda's Mount Ngai, a plant charged immeasurably and most of all by millennia of exposure to the radiation of Wakandan vibranium. Its extracts are lethal to most humans save those who have a royal bloodline extending back to the time of Bashenga, the country's first Black Panther.

The ritual and herb grants T'Challa with superhuman constitution, affecting all the natures and humors of men. He has greatly enhanced speed, strength, agility, healing and durability in comparison even to the peak of human athleticism. Wakandan scientists have likened the effect of the ritual to a hyperextension of the body's natural tissues in collusion with a hyperawareness of things, a principle called kinesthetics. Soul and sinew alike give the Wakandan Black Panther supernatural grace and nigh-peerless agility. The blessing grants him the favor of Bast, as well as the ability to see and scent the spirits and souls of men, even across many miles.

The Black Panther is celebrated in his country for his strength. For having a supernatural awareness of the world around him, for peerless wisdom, for the speed of greatest winds and for a fist to fell any beast. Though T'Challa's strength cannot match the higher echelons of the metahumans who walk the world today, he has been gifted with the wisdom to walk the veldt between skill, speed and strength, and as the emissary of the Panther God, T'Challa's capacities can no longer be strictly limited to those of humans.

"I am the panther-king who stalks the soul across ocean, desert and plain. I drink in the malice of blinkered men and break them under my reign. I am damisa-sarki, and there is no escape. Not for my enemies."
