Isa Reichert

Born the daughter of a pilot and a secretary, Raisa Ivanovna Yakovleva launched a meteoric rise through the ranks of her country's air force. A test pilot with a gift for flying and public relations, she was the darling of her officers, the press, and the people.

At thirty-three she was approached by Icarus Dynamics, a suspicious influential firm dealing in biotechnics and military hardware. Suspicious, she refused, doing some digging to find out more about them. Horrified by what she found, she put the incident behind her, but Icarus discovered the theft and sabotaged her career. With her prospects looking bleaker by the day, they approached her again, sweetening their offers. She refused again.

Several things happened at once. Her parents died in a car crash. Friends went radio silent or missing. Her finances mysteriously ran dry. No longer was she the darling of the press, the people, and her superiors. Her next flight was sabotaged. When she left the runway, it burst into flame and the ejection seat jammed. By the time rescue crews found her, she was human wreckage, with burns over a quarter of her body, including her face. She lost her right eye. It took months to leave her hospital bed, and years to recover. Her superiors told her she was finished.

Raisa refused to accept it. The sky was hers. Over the years, she rehabilitated herself to prove them wrong, pulling strings and cashing in favours. When skill and tenacity didn't win them over after hours of argument, she understood. Icarus had turned them. It was the last straw. Raisa took one more shot at Icarus, hiring infiltrators with the last of her money. Armed with specs from their newest horror-show prototype, she left the wreckage of her old life behind, changing her name and flying to New York City.

She brought her stolen data to S.H.I.E.L.D. and sought a bargain. In exchange for a chance to fly again and personal safety, she would help them take down the global threat that Icarus Dynamics threatened to become. Her offer was accepted, her past buried, and bound beneath so much red tape only the highest-ranking agents would ever know her full name and history.

At thirty-eight, she pilots quinjets for the organisation that gave her life back, acting as personal pilot to any agent who needs to get someplace yesterday. Her flying is superior, and she prides herself on getting agents where they need to go, and getting them home safe again. When it comes to flying into danger, she handles herself with nerves of steel… almost like she has some kind of military training.

She's sure not giving up any details, though.

Recent Events

Since the destruction of the Triskelion, Isa has kept her head down and done her job without attracting very much attention to herself.

She's also been doing field testing for Stark Industries on the side.

First Steps: Groot and Rocket introduce Isa to Phil Coulson, whom she pitches her concerns about Icarus Dynamics to. If she can impress on Coulson the scale of threat an unchecked Icarus Dynamics represents, she might be able to gain S.H.I.E.L.D.'S help.

Raisa Ivanovna Yakovleva was once happy and well-adjusted, balancing a caring nature with serving her country. She was pleasant in her interactions with others. Her optimism's tenacity bordered on "impressively consistent." Or maybe "obnoxious," to some.

That all went out the window after the accident. She lost vast swaths of her personal life to tragedy, and she lost even more on the long road to recovery. After that, Raisa withdrew, embittered and furious toward Icarus Dynamics, whom she rightly suspected of ruining her life. Gone was the bright and optimistic woman of before. Raisa became angry, bitter, and vindictive; a shadow for her former self animated by rage and vengeance.

Time has at least blunted the edge of her anger, simmering down into cold, glacial fury. Her anger is a deeply-buried thing, now, nurtured quietly with private promises of vengeance. She copes shockingly well with adversity and loss, inured against the pain after what she'd gone through.

There isn't much Raisa actually fears, but there are a few things: Loss, and fire. Abrasion and cynicism have become her armour, or occasionally a cudgel, keeping people from getting too close. She fears abandonment, as so many of her extended family and friends abandoned her during the long agony of her years in recovery. Fire, too, has become the thing that haunts her nightmares. The worst of her scarring, horrific as it may be, is not the physical.

Since the accident, keeping her skills sharp is a coping method. She's proud of what she's accomplished in the wake of her injuries, and as a result she can be overly sensitive about her professional pride and skills. She'll go right on the defensive against any slights against her abilities, real or imagined.

All of those good qualities are still buried within her, and sometimes they can even be appealed to when she's in the right frame of mind. She is ferociously protective of allies and friends. Once her loyalty is given, it is absolute.

Since her relocation to New York City and her induction into S.H.I.E.L.D., she's made a point of looking out for her fellow agents. She might find some of the organisation's actions distasteful from time to time, but in a way, they're her family, now. She's gone all in.

It's not all bloody vengeance all the time. Isa does have a few hobbies she's fostered since arriving. She's taken up slide guitar, with an admiration for American and British blues. She's a beginner, but a talented one; only her hunted status keeps her from playing the city's amateur clubs.

As an easterner in a western world, Isa's adjustment has been a little rocky. She's quietly learned how best to fit in as a stranger in a strange world, though, slowly becoming somewhat Americanized in the process. Certain concepts still baffle her; not necessarily with any rancor, but simple puzzlement in how two cultures can be so very different.

RP Hooks

• If your character is any ranked member of S.H.I.E.L.D., they've probably crossed paths with Isa at some point, either at the Triskelion or Roosevelt Island facilities.

• Is your middling-rank S.H.I.E.L.D. character curious about why vast chunks of her background are locked behind an impassable wall of security clearance red tape?

• Field agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have every reason to bump into her, and have probably been taken to missions or back home by Isa and a standard-issue quinjet.

• Characters with ties to the shady business world might have reason to dislike Isa. Icarus Dynamics has a long reach and lots of business partnerships.

• Those who spend time around Stark Industries might have noticed Isa. She's one of the newer prototype test pilots crazy enough to fly Stark's designs… without dying.

• Russian characters may know of who Isa used to be. They might be jealous of her reputation, or they might wonder what happened to her.
