Jim Gordon

History

This character is an NPC, presently controlled by Batgirl.

Chicago-born James Worthington Gordon ended up in Gotham City after his divorce, bringing with him his young daughter Barbara. Retiring out of the marines, James decided to become a cop. The hours were long, and he had to leave his daughter up to her own devices much of the time.

The first three weeks on the job proved to be the most telling for Jim. He was the first on the scene of the murder of the Waynes, connecting with the young boy — Bruce — who had survived the deaths of his parents. He was surprised by the casual dismissal of the murders, and it was the first peek into the corruption of the Gotham law enforcement.

Unlike most of the cops in the GCPD, Jim was almost impossible to corrupt and often acted as the moral compass of the department. Despite the odds, James moved through the ranks of the police department until he was a young Captain with a daughter in high school. At this time, Batman started to make his appearance on the streets.

In a strange twist to Jim's life, his ex-wife Barbara showed up on his doorstep with a young boy bearing his namesake. There was a brief stint of happiness in the Gordon household with the family reunited, but his ex-wife disappeared weeks later, leaving James, Jr. in his father's care.

Jim became an ally of Batman's after he proved himself during an uprising of Gotham villains. At the end of the long year of terror, Jim ended up being promoted to Commissioner.

Little to Jim's knowledge, his daughter at sixteen was recruited by Batman to be one of his students. Soon after this, his son was placed in Arkham Asylum after he was found to have murdered every cat on the family's block, including Barbara's own burmese kitten Alaska.

Jim continued to be a fierce ally of the Batman and his growing family.

Recent Events

  • Jim Gordon participated in the shortlived Tri-Cities Law Enforcement Coalition — a law enforcement group from Gotham, New York City, and Metropolis to help tackle issues around vigilantes. After a false Punisher shot up the convention in Gotham, the coalition was dissolved.

Personality

Jim Gordon is fiercely loyal, extremely level-headed, and pragmatic to a fault. He respects the secret identities of the vigilantes around Gotham, having no wish to learn their identity because that means he would have to arrest them.
