Nightwing

History

Richard Grayson grew up among the performers of Haly's Circus, a world-famous traveling circus that toured the United States. His family comprised a troupe of acrobats and aerialists, the Flying Graysons, and even as a young man he had gained fame for his daredevil performances. Unfortunately, with the modern decline in popularity for such performances, the circus came under certain financial stresses. Shaken down by the mob for owed money, Dick's parents were killed when their sabotage equipment failed during a live performance, a warning to the circus owners. Attending that fateful performance was the famous Gotham businessman and socialite Bruce Wayne.

Evoking sympathies in Bruce, given his own tragic childhood, he arranged for Richard to enter his care, initially at a sponsored care center. Seeing that the young teen was pursuing his own criminal investigation, Batman eventually became involved, and it wouldn't be long before they formed what would eventually become a famous partnership as Batman and his new sidekick Robin. As Bruce's protege and ward, Dick studied and improved his various crimefighting skills, joining the Dark Knight in conflicts against all of his most famous foes.

Their partnership endured over several years, although Dick would soon enough start to 'spread his wings.' The first step was in forming a new team of young crime-fighters, recruiting other sidekicks as well as several newly-emerged heroes who lacked a firm place in the dangerous hero world. Using Wayne resources, they soon had a base of operations - and plenty of new crime to fight - in New York City. However, as Dick was forced to split his time between NYC and Gotham, his responsibilities between his new team and the Bat began to pull on him. Bruce had his way of doing things, while Dick had developed a very different style with the Titans. Yet when he went back to Gotham, it was the Bat-way or bust. Eventually, this would lead him to adopt a new crimefighting persona as Nightwing, formally cutting himself from his sidekick identity… although hardly from the ever-growing Bat-family. Over the years, they'd picked up a Batgirl or two, and Bruce would (too!) quickly replace him with a Robin. Now, even though he'd left the cave, Dick couldn't help but feel drawn back in to shoulder his new responsibilities as the 'big brother' of the growing team.

In the years since, Dick has continued pursuing his solo career as Nightwing, striking out on the streets of Gotham and in nearby Bludhaven. At the same time, he's felt difficulty in letting go of the friends and life he made with the Titans in New York. Not one to be stumped by any problem (and always keen to take on more responsibility than any sane person would try), he's devised a way to juggle both lives: after working closely with the a Manhattan Assistant DA during his Titan days, the then college-aged Grayson was encouraged to consider work in Law Enforcement. And he's done just that. After graduating with a Forensic Sciences degree, he attended the Academy and quickly became an NYPD Detective. Law by day, Vigilante by night - it's a tough balancing act, but then again, he's the world's greatest acrobat.

Personality

Lighthearted by nature, laughing in the face of danger and evil, Dick Grayson is a study in not just trauma but resilience, in many ways the contrasting case to his mentor. The death of his parents affected him deeply, but with the support of surrogate parents in Alfred and Bruce and the sense of accomplishment crimefighting has brought him? He's grieved and moved on, finding new relationships in new teams, building a life beyond the hardship. This isn't to say he doesn't have his quirks, and that his drive for justice doesn't sometimes push him too far. Still, if he's anything, Dick is a rock for those around him, a perpetual big-brother, friend, and leader to his own generation of young heroes… and the next.

January 05, 2019. Mysterious Coincidences

As promised over Christmas, Tim Drake and Zatanna Zatara go on a first date that ultimately starts with a pantsing incident at the ice rink and ends with running into his adoptive big brother and his supermodel girlfriend. Lies, awkwardness, hilarity, sign-language conversations on top of actual conversations, weird hot chocolate flavors and a detailed discussion about the terrors of deep space ensue (Zatanna was definitely watching Total Recall again).

January 01, 2019. Auld Lang Syne

The Titans, old and new, as well as a few other friends ring in the New Year in their typical style - like sampling near-lethal alien dishes, underaged drinking, ugly (but awesome) Christmas sweaters, way too much sugar and…TWISTER?
