Barbara Gordon is the beloved daughter of Jim Gordon — and therefore the entire Gotham City Police Department. She was born in Chicago, but most of her life is rooted in Gotham; her world is small — small and corrupt and dangerous. But that is the soil that can breed something good and full of heart. While always under the watchful eye of every Jim Gordon loyalist in Gotham City, Barbara lived a happy and simple childhood in a city that is anything but.

She proved to be quite the brainiac as a young child — gifted, some would say. With that came all levels of social awkwardness because no one is gifted at everything. Babs kept her head down through most of school with a very small friend group that dwindled as the oddness of puberty changed and altered friendships.

When Barbara was eleven, she pressed her dad into letting her take martial arts training. She sold it as a way to stay active and because it was something she hadn’t tried yet; deep down inside, she wanted to be a fighter. It was a layer of adrenaline she had not experienced yet. Like most things that Barbara puts her mind to, she excelled in martial arts, gaining her first black belt within the first year, and ending up a regional competitor by the time she was in high school.

At the age of sixteen, Babs embarked on her journey to become a vigilante by thwarting a violent escape in her father's precinct. It was winter break, and Babs was spending time with her younger brother at their dad's precinct. A poor rookie cop named Jake Toredelo — just eighteen to Barbara's sixteen — was assigned their tour guide, and the three spent much of the day in the bullpen where Jake tried to impress Barbara with his know-how and skills, and Barbara tried to learn more about what Batman had been up to in Gotham.

That’s when the precinct erupted into chaos. Three criminals had broken free before they could be fully detained and were wreaking havoc throughout the building. Jake and Barbara crossed one of their paths near the conference rooms. Jake put up a great show of force, but was taken out. Barbara ran for it, ducking into a room that was being used for the ongoing case against Batman.

In the room, she found a rough display of Batman’s suit. In what can only be called a choice of spirit, Barbara donned the suit and cowl. It was laughable — in some ways — running tights and an Under Armor shirt with a rough cape and cowl. But putting it on seemed to imbue Barbara with something. She stormed back out into the halls of the almost-vacant floor, and took out the thug who had knocked out Jake and then went on a hunt to find the other two.

In one of the stairwells, she met another of the thugs. This one proved to be an actual challenge, and Barbara was almost dispatched before the actual Batman interceded. He defeated the criminal, and immediately turned on Barbara to chastise her for making such a foolish choice to go after a criminal element on her own. She fired back at him, making it clear that he needed allies. She left him standing in the stairwell, going to return the half-assed costume so that her dad wouldn’t find her like this.

Something must have hit home, even if Batman is impossible to read. On the last night of her winter break, Batman visited the Gordon home, finding Barbara in the garage working on her motorcycle. He didn’t come with compliments, but neither did he come with reprimand. He simply offered her a chance to do what she was meant to do: bring justice to an unjust Gotham. Only once she agreed did he reveal that he was actually Bruce Wayne. Dumbfounded, all she could do was accept the gift he brought: her very first utility belt, complete with her first set of batarangs.

That set Barbara on the path to becoming Batgirl. With it, her family expanded — Dick Grayson, Dinah Lance, and then Kate Kane, Jason Todd, Tim Drake. She became part of this close-knit group of vigilantes that helped fight the corrupt crime that reigned across Gotham. She was always working against her father — finding ways to sneak out of the house, finding ways to make excuses for bruises and scrapes.

When she was eighteen, she got a full ride to Ballard College in New York City, and put aside the cape to try to live a different life. She lasted a year, working on a degree in criminal justice. Then she came home, and… couldn't look away from the pain and turmoil that strangled her city. So she came home, and transferred to Gotham University to get a degree in Library Sciences, and resumed her life as Batgirl.

In the spring of 2018, Barbara Gordon got drawn into the grief and mystery of the man named Frank Castle. Becoming one of his allies, Barbara crossed many lines that she swore she would never do — one of which being working with a known villain. Working with Owen Mercer was an unexpected change in Barbara’s core code, but so was aligning herself with Frank Castle. She helped him find justice… and revenge… even if she never took a life herself.

  • Babs and John attend a Christmas gala with other vigilantes and the gala is attacked by a gang of demon skull-wearing gangers who use some kind of substance to make them hulk out with dire consequences.

Barbara is intelligent, mischievous, and confident. She enters almost every situation with the ease of a chameleon. Her core is good, but she is also guided by harsh realities that makes it so she doesn't always choose the greater good if it may still harm those close to her.
