Family problems can be complicated. Regarding Raven's own family, those problems were amped up to eleven. The short story: Raven was the product of an unholy cult union between the demon Trigon and an unfortunate human woman named Angela (who had taken on the name of Arella). After said unholy union came to fruition, Trigon revealed his true form. Arella conceived, and in fearing for her life, she fled in between dimensions to Azarath, a colorful paradise-like reality run by pacifist monks who were quite content in their tranquil little world.

Despite a few complaints of how Arella and the now-born Raven had disturbed the peace of their humble community, the High Priestess Azar disregarded their cries, taking full responsibility of raising Raven once her mother stepped out of the picture to work out her own issues. Realizing that Raven possessed great power to manipulate emotions, she made sure to teach her how to rein in her own feelings while keeping her in the dark about its presence. Arella then took over the mentoring process after the first ten years passed, maintaining the mentor-student relationship since they had become distant as mother and daughter. Unfortunately, Raven felt the presence of her father grow in the years following, leading up to a small reunion.

Trigon eventually found Raven, which soon revealed the darkness that thrived within her. Seeing her potential, he allowed her to stay with him to continue further training in his realm. Free will was both a gift and a curse; with it, Raven was allowed to think and act for herself; with it, she knew she full-well was only a pawn in the grand scheme of things. Her father intended to use her powers with his own to conquer worlds which included Azarath and Arella's home world - Earth.

Anger and rage were two of many emotions she was personally used to feeling, but fear and despair overwhelmed them. She feared unleashing her father's power over the weak and unsuspecting masses. The unrelenting sadness came from the fact that she was potentially going to turn against her own kind in the process, bringing about destruction to the planet at large. In heeding her humanity, she knew she couldn't allow this to happen.

Although she was to be the tool to secure his victory, Raven had an advantage her father did not - without her assistance, he couldn't travel freely across the realms. Selfish reasons and the desperation to keep these worlds from meeting their ultimate demise, the Daughter of Darkness decided to make a run for it. Tapping into her dark magics, she skipped through dimensions to escape her father's grasp, arriving on Earth way ahead of his planned schedule.

Raven was initially able to manage fine enough on her own. She mostly observed the world around her before Red Robin appeared out of nowhere, extending a hand as a connection in case she needed help. By accepting his offer, she was then accepted into the Titans team. And it was awful.

Recent Events

It would be cheating to say Raven has no personality whatsoever. Still, it's mostly true; Raven is a quiet, stoic young woman who rarely shows a hint of emotion to anyone who is lucky enough to be in her company. However, she is most likely screaming internally due to all of the emotions she struggles with on a daily basis. It's not only her emotions, either; being an empath, she feels the brunt of the emotions put upon her by those who are blissfully unaware of her abilities. And depending on the person, it usually results in varying levels of awful.

Exposure to behaviors outside of Azarath's more…serene citizens have some effect on how she interacts with others. Aside from being cold and emotionally distant, Raven can be mildly sarcastic like any normal girl her age. The eventual shift in her demeanor depends on who she's talking to — as it so goes for nearly anyone who knows how to handle social relationships. Unfortunately, actively letting her guard down to kick back and relax isn't in the cards. The stress of constantly needing to be in control of her own feelings along with the fear of having something worse happen to those she comes into contact with can potentially kill her, but she obviously has built up resilience to stay afloat.

Character Sheet

Raven can cross into the Astral realm, leaving her physical body defenseless. In this form she has access to her other abilities. Those who are regular practitioners of magic will recognize her as demon-blooded.

The darkness is a natural part of Raven's being. While the effects are neat, it has practical use; with the darkness, she can project her consciousness into a shadowy construct that either takes her form or one of a giant raven. This can also be used as a kind of shadowy telekinesis which allows her to levitate and move inanimate objects without breaking a sweat; she can also create extensions of herself to aid others in combat by mentally controlling the attacks like a giant shadow puppet or forming defensive barriers to shield those who happen to be in harm's way; and she can temporarily make herself intangible by melding with the darkness available, allowing her to go through walls and doors whenever it's necessary. Fighting off Raven's dark form will not physically harm her; since she leaves herself open while projecting, however, it is possible to break her concentration with physical, mental, or emotional attacks.

Raven can teleport across vast distances almost instantaneously, and, with effort, can take others with her. In doing so, those that traverse this will see brief images of darkness as they shift through a dark, unknown dimension.

Depending on the situation, Raven may take advantage of her empath abilities to simply sway the emotions of those around her. She can either take away emotions to leave someone feeling numb, or she can add onto the emotional duress someone is already undergoing. She can also manipulate emotions according to her needs in the moment, but it isn't something she does on a regular basis.

(Disclaimer: This ability is governed by the game's consent policy and cannot dictate another character's reaction or actions without explicit consent to do so. Attempted IC use of this ability does not guarantee success.)

Much like levitating inanimate objects, Raven can make herself "fly" by levitating herself. This doesn't take as much concentration as it would trying to make another living person fly through the air for any such reason.

When Raven uses her healing powers, it relies more on the use of her empathic abilities than her dark magic. With it, she is able to reduce the severity of both the pain and the actual injuries to a certain extent. The downside, however, has its effects on her own emotional sanity due to taking on the emotional conditions the injured person is going through at the time, which can sometimes mean she will take on more pain than she can actually handle.
