Scarlet Witch

Recent Events

While Pietro inherited Erik Lehnsherr's infamous rage, fiery passion, and inability to forgive, Wanda is her father's reserve, watchfulness, and cold cunning.

Her twin's personality fans explosively out into the world, while she draws in, far more self-possessed and conservative, an introspective creature who thinks before she acts, and conducts herself cautiously, carefully, with an exacting patience.

Wanda's composure, however, is fraying at the seams. She carries the weight of a guilty conscience, haunted years later by the curse of being the Scarlet Witch, and committing acts that namely killed her adoptive mother, plagued countless innocents, and bound her twin brother to bear her burden for so many years.

That, in addition to her hard life, and the years of inadvertent suffering at the hands of her own powers, have carved deep, irreversible fractures in Wanda's sanity. Most of the time, she holds herself resolutely together: existing as a single function of restraint, though her heavy chains and reinforced locks are not perfect — all barely-containing a destructive madness that wishes only to force its will on the very fabric of reality.

But ten years in the private tutelage and custody of her father, Magneto, Wanda Maximoff has become a tamed, tempered creature, embodying so many aspects of his will, and exercising her vast inheritance when it comes to her awareness of self, her high expectation of others, and her desire to assuage her suffering and pains on the exercise of a cold and all-consuming control.

Character Sheet

Long ago, Earth's ancient mages fought the Old One, Chthon, and bound him within a lie: that there is no more God of Chaos, and no more chaos magic. The action struck chaos magic from mystical memory, severed the Elder God from his vesseling dimension, and sealed him deep beneath Wundagore Mountain. From that, chaos magic was forgotten, deemed no more.

But Chthon, with his foresight and timeless patience, devised his loophole: his touch on Wanda Maximoff imbued her with all he lost, binding her to his lost, forsaken dimension, and reshaping her into the vessel for its power. His dark magicks changed her in the womb, reconfiguring her mutant ability, and transforming her into something even beyond her X-Gene.

Beyond a mutant, beyond a sorceress, Wanda Maximoff is meant to be something else: designed to be a spinning nexus of Chaos, itself. Chthon's second reincarnation. Beyond her ability, she holds the potential to become a great practitioner in chaos magic — the art to make, reshape, or tear down reality by her own whims.

Perhaps fortunately, Wanda does not yet know this gift, and believes her abilities all a function of her mutant gene.

Wanda Maximoff possesses the ability to affect and manipulate probability space and control outcomes — either to create events at random or at will. This can only occur within a finite space: namely what is directly in her line of sight, and she cannot yet alter outcomes beyond her proximal space. She employs two ways of doing this: "hex bolts" for stronger, direct, short-range uses, and "hex spheres" to target a larger, and more diffuse probability space.

With these manipulations, essentially Wanda can define an event to happen "almost surely" or "almost never": neither conditions are absolute, and within these manipulations is a small, but dangerous likelihood that her hex can fail: or worse, turn on her.

The ramifications of this power are vast: Wanda can use this manipulation of probabilities to grant her a vast and extensive effect on the environment around her, or even to turn its power itself into specific other uses: such as a hex to heal another's wound, or a hex to temporarily suppress an aspect of someone's powers, or a hex to confuse someone's perception, or a hex to try to delve deep into someone's mind.

The drawback to her power, varied as it is, is that Wanda cannot sustain use of it for long without tiring. Crafting a new probability requires focus, concentration, and expense of energy, and if she crafts many hexes, or is forced to maintain one hex for a long time, her probability fields run the risk of altering or backfiring.

At worst, Wanda, when fatigued or overtaxed, will construct a failed probability space that can backfire with unforeseen or contrary consequences. It could distribute pure chaos among multiple events. It could even turn on her — and it usually prefers to.

(Disclaimer: This ability is governed by the game's consent policy and cannot dictate another character's reaction or actions without explicit consent to do so. Attempted IC use of this ability does not guarantee success.)

Whether a boon or curse of the Witch, Wanda no longer parses the world the way most do. Colours, shapes, textures, sounds, faces, voices — they are a lost system of measurement, limited, superficial, and unhelpful to someone who is forced to "see" reality as an ever-changing array of possibilities. Staid constants and switching variables.

With this gift, Wanda can see, sense, or scry into dimensions far beyond the physical. She can even look down into the theatre of one's soul, inference their many permutations cast alongside the manifest destiny, and read configurations they could take in other lives, other worlds. She can "speak" to probability around her, which allows her a sense of connection with matter and energy. She can commune with non-sentient life, and even inanimate objects: chaos has a voice in all things.

She can make vague inferences at the past and future, though it is not a perfect art, often muddled by the "could be" that feels as true as "what is."

Beyond all, Wanda's sight is a noise, constant and all-consuming, and her habituation comes at the steep cost of her sanity. Even now, it is still a heavy burden to bear.
