Winter Soldier

James Barnes was the very archetype of what successful young 20th century youth should be. An excellent student and athlete, he was gregarious and well-liked socially by all who met him. He had everything — which was why many thought it odd that his best friend, ever since childhood, was skinny little Steve Rogers. The two were inseparable — up until World War II broke out, and the 4F classification finally succeeded in pushing them apart. Bucky went to war, and Steve stayed home.

Not for long, though. Bucky found himself reunited with his friend before long, except Steve had? changed. Bucky didn't really know it at the time, but his best friend had become the first publicly acknowledged superhero in the world.

Lesser men might not have been able to continue the friendship. Neither men could ever be assigned the label of 'lesser,' however, and their bond only strengthened as they fought through many battles of WWII. It remained strong up until the moment Steve Rogers witnessed his friend's assumed "death" — and shortly thereafter, himself disappeared from the world. The year was 1945.

Their paths diverged. Bucky was found shortly after his presumed death — by Soviet soldiers. In concert with Hydra, they commenced a program that would come to be called the Winter Soldier program. As its centerpiece, James Barnes was revived, repaired, experimented upon, enhanced — and reprogrammed. He was injected with a lesser, imitated version of the Super Soldier serum given to Steve Rogers. He was given a new bionic left arm to replace the one damaged beyond all repair. His fall had left his mind broken, memories scattered to the four winds, with the only sure thing left in his brain all the skills he had learned over the years. Hydra made sure those memories stayed scattered, and piled countless layers of brainwashing and conditioning over top until they created a weapon that could walk invisibly in the Western world, among other Americans — and then, with incisive precision, strike and fade away.

His shattered mind was reformed, his skills honed and reconfigured, a new personality stacked atop his damaged old one. This new man, the Winter Soldier, was a master of espionage and wetwork. He was a faithful blade of the Soviet state.

Like any good blade, he was sheathed when not in use. Cryogenic technology kept him in a state of suspended animation between missions, preserving his youth so successive generations of intelligence directors, aspiring politicians, and corrupt military leaders could put his talents to use. He worked intermittently, but fairly continuously, throughout the Korean War, the Vietnam War, then Cold War. His name became a curse in the intelligence community over the decades, an oppressive ghost felt in the room whenever things went wrong. Then the Berlin Wall came down, and many Soviet programs were officially retired, including the Winter Soldier program.

Of course, however, that was just the official statement, and official statements never did apply to Hydra. They barely even applied to Russia, a country well-versed in saying one thing and meaning quite another. The Winter Soldier remained an option, though largely unused for some time — a relic waiting to be reactivated —until his full re-acquisition by Hydra.

Recently, he was activated by a rogue cell of Hydra operating in New York, only to finally shake his leash after two months of operation in his own place of birth. Instrumental in this was one Dr. Jane Foster, who helped him remember his past.

His hard-won freedom did not exempt him from facing his past, however. Within a few months the link between the Winter Soldier and James Barnes was discovered, and he was tried for his actions as the former.

Defended by Matthew Murdock, he was acquitted, but the road to redemption continued.

Recent Events

Jane's invitation to the fateful Mizizi conference in Wakanda spurred a dire series of events leading to his own near death, the uncovering of a Hydra infiltration in the country, and a hush-up operation that left them unable to speak of what had transpired.

Their time in Wakanda led Jane to dabble more and more in technomagic, with dark consequences; she attracted the attention of the Demon Bear, a spirit that haunted Danielle Moonstar. They were corrupted by the Bear into its Heralds, only for Jane to turn on it and bind it in turn. They were stopped before they could deal too much damage, but enough of Jane's corrupt code slipped through to become a nano-infection that would be used for ill purposes — and which would change Tony Stark beyond all their imaginings.

Throughout his life, James Barnes has suffered a theme of being unable to trust his own mind — of being unable to feel sure that he will not have his control ripped away from him again, and be misused for dire purposes. It happened with the Soviets. It happened with Hydra. It happened again with the Demon Bear. Again and again, he was turned into a weapon.

Thus it was that when the registration act was passed, he immediately registered himself. The fear of a government turning him into a tool again, could not compare to the fear of them not having a contingency in place to shut him down were he to lose himself again.

The personality of James Barnes is a difficult thing to define, being that it is now tangled irrevocably with the persona of the Winter Soldier. The individual known as Bucky Barnes was a vivacious, outgoing, and gregarious individual, effortlessly popular with just about everyone he met. Above all he was generous of spirit, fiercely loyal, and fiercely protective, unable to stand for seeing weaker individuals being picked on, and willing to defend them when no one else would. Once he counted you a close friend of his, he would always have your back.

Many of these personality traits have survived having to integrate with the Winter Soldier, though in altered form. Much of the way he was is still there, but darkened by decades of forced murder: his vivacity dampened, his gregariousness quashed, his easy humor turned to a much more cynical, sarcastic sort of amusement. There is a gravity, a tension, and a quiet lethality about him now which did not characterize him prior to his 'death.' He projects the preoccupied, bleak air of a man weighed down by acts and sights he cannot undo or unsee.

RP Hooks

Bucky Barnes is still known first and foremost for being Steve Rogers' best friend, a veteran of WWII, and — especially among the military — one of the progenitors of the modern-day special operations unit. Now that it is public knowledge he was also the Winter Soldier, a long list of crimes has been added to that list of accolades.

  • Most people know Bucky for being Captain America's old wartime friend.
  • As the Winter Soldier, Bucky was used to train many generations of killers like himself: primarily in the Red Room. You might have been taught by him.
  • If you fought in any of the major wars since the Korean War, you might have run across him.
  • Many now know of him for being outed as the Winter Soldier in 2017. He was tried for his crimes in a highly publicized trial in that same year, and ultimately acquitted.
  • He may have killed one or both of your parents.

Character Sheet

Bionic Arm

The most immediately notable attribute of the Winter Soldier, this cybernetic replaced the left arm Bucky lost in his traumatic fall. An advanced mechanical implant created by Jane Foster after his original was lost, it is distinctive for its system of fine interlocking plates which offer lifelike flexibility and tactile sensitivity, but which can also lock solidly into place to provide unyielding striking power, or to serve as a rudimentary shield against conventional weapons fire. Using this arm he is able to apply force considerably greater than he could otherwise even with his enhanced strength, and accordingly he consciously swaps to it when he needs to overpower something through brute strength. Specifically it is capable of applying several tons of force, sufficient to tear through steel restraints and powder concrete. It is also considerably more responsive than his flesh arm, with faster reflexes. For the purposes of his work, the arm is capable of shielding itself and other metal on his person from conventional metal detectors and other security screening.

Enhanced Physiology

After the fall that nearly killed him and resulted in the loss of his arm, Bucky was recovered by the Soviets and given a lesser version of the Super Soldier serum that was administered to Steve Rogers. Without it, he would not be able to bear the weight and strength of the bionic arm that replaced his lost left arm.

He exhibits the classic across-the-board enhancements of the super soldier to a similar degree as Captain America: enhanced strength, speed, stamina, reflexes, and resilience. His pain tolerance, both due to his super soldier enhancements and due to the realities of his existence, is exemplary; he also heals much more quickly than the average person. Among the things this enables are the ability to leap from considerable heights of several stories, to weave and dodge submachine gun fire, to endure the blows of other superhuman individuals without injury, and to outpace cars at a dead run, as well as overall strength and conditioning sufficient to catch, lift, and fling a motorcycle traveling at speed.

"I can see now the burden that Steve's always carried. And it feels strange to admit I want that burden back… but underneath it all, what I really know is…. I want to deserve it… somehow."
