Found in the nearby city of New York by one of the other students, apparently having played a chess match against none other than Steve Rogers, the Captain America himself, and failing to put up much of anything resembling a proper game, Ombra had met Jean Grey almost immediately upon arrival and it was recommended to her that she at least speak with the resident Dr. McCoy as one of many hundreds of steps on the road to getting her abilities under some kind of control. It is rumored that her abilities of silence and darkness are infectious, but thusfar no one has reported such symptoms.
The silent shadowy girl is exploring the grounds on her second day as a guest, being moderately shy but exuberatly friendly at the same time. At times she is among readers, peering over a book being held by one of the students, sharing it.

* * *

Beast had been informed of the girl's presence by Jean, but he hadn't wanted to simply pounce upon her. Whatever she was going through could be neither simple nor easily solved. He saw no reason to make her feel like a guinea pig. He'd been there himself, on more than one occasion.

Still, the time came along and he spotted her while she was walking along the grounds as he peered out of the window of his office. He slid open the shutter and casually dropped from the window, doing a couple of spins before landing on his feet with aplomb. "Greetings, my young friend! I hope not to startle you too deeply, but I believe you might be needing some assistance? Dr. Henry McCoy, local investigator of the unknown, plumber of the dark mysteries and friendly neighborhood medicinalist. I hope you have found our accomodations suitable for your needs thus far."

* * *

The initial reaction from the young woman is evident startledness, not really expecting to have anything large and blue appear in any fashion, but the startled gives way to fascination. Her unseen eyes widen, her posture expands from the very tight state it had become, and after a moment passes, her hand lifts to wave. She stares transfixed, watching while her greeter does his best to enhance her listening experience with his command of the language, trying to find a moment that won't seem disruptive and points to her ear, then with the same hand, forms a blade-like position of her fingers and swipes past that same ear. Then the same hand engages in several signed words as she turns profile for Hank as her outline is all one can see: 'silent hopeful sorrow'
What is visible on her face in profile is a half smile. She isn't sure her message will be understood, but it never hurts to probe.

* * *

Beast nods softly to show that he understands. Genius that he is, he's quite familiar with quite a few methods of communication, not to mention deeply versed in semiotics theory to help him understand symbology and subtext in communication. He can read body language quite well, although not in the way that would help him in any sort of combat scenario. Just enough to better understand his fellow man.

"I would like to invite you to come to my laboratory at your leisure, for tests and examinations of your abilities and their subsequent effects. Nothing untowards or probing. Nothing to which you do not consent. As comfortable as I can possibly make it and at your convenience. First and foremost, we want you to feel safe here. I want to help you if I can, but not at the expense of your sense of stability."

* * *

What can be read from the young woman's posture as the enlightened Doctor both signs and speaks is delight! Certain she is not interrupting she adds a signal midway thorugh, 'Thank you for using both at same time'. She is still attentive, and in a good way, overwhelmed. It's quite probable that she's shedding tears. Certain with a sufficiently good sense of smell. Absent though, hearing. Nothing she has done has even registered as sound. The vibrations she makes on the ground don't even produce it. Hand signals, that she is well versed in and does provide.
'Only scared of being scary' and 'scary to touch', 'scary to see' and then she offers her hand, signing 'sample won't harm'

* * *

Beast works to make sure he parses her signals correctly. Interpretation can be a key point with something as simple as gesture. Everything needs to be precise and correct to convey meaning. He rather likes it in some ways.

"You are not scary." he signs and says. "This place is for people who are different. No one will judge."

* * *

'Learned that here' Ombra responds, almost euphoric as she considers just how much acceptance she has come to know here, but it's not long before the euphoric gives way to sobering understanding. 'I willingly submit for your tests' This she offers with no visible sign of distrust, dismay, or discertainty. She has an eerie sort of confidence about her own well-being. Much greater than the typical youthly assumption that nothing can possibly do any harm.

* * *

Beast smiles, "No time like th present," he signs. He leads the way up into the building, through a few corridors and down to his laboratory. Medical and scientific equipment abound as he guides her to one of the medical tables, urging her just to sit, "A moment, if you will, while I find the proper instruments," he says, then, remembering himself, signs something equivalent, if a little less flourid.

* * *

After a quick visual inspection of the medical table, Ombra hoists herself up to sit on the sanitary paper surface, settling there. It's immediately evident that everything coming into contact with her physically takes on similar properties to herself, yet the floor where she walks undergoes no change at all. She takes the moment to cut the sanitation paper from its roll, and the roll returns to its typical colour. While her attention wanders, the paper beneath her seems to have vanished. She changes her posture to kneeling rather than sitting on the now uncovered table.

* * *

Beast brings over a complex series of instruments, designed to allow him to examine various electromagnetic wavelengths in regards to Ombra's body and vicinity. He takes some time to adjust and make sure the fields are properly set, then calibrates the software on his computer to analyze incoming data. "Sorry for the wait, just have to get things right," he signs, having given himself a pair of rather silly looking goggles in the process.

* * *

Very few of the instruments are familiar to Ombra, but those that are clearly designed to come in contact with her, she warns with a raised hand, and an explanation comes with it: 'anything touch me not heavier it will vanish' A motion to indicate the sanitation paper roll as an example of a recent such incident. This might also be why she has nothing on her body. It's not easy to notice at first. 'takes about minute to poof'

* * *

Beast nods, "Yes. Peculiar that. We may experiment with that next. This should not touch you. Just give information," he says. He takes a moment to look through the scope of one device, amping it up a bit as he attempts to get a read on Ombra's energy signature.

* * *

The light probing instrument, it does not seem to like Ombra at all. Sends light wave in, reads nothing at all coming out. An emissions reader, that seems to have a much better time! She's not producing anything really special. The lighting effect appears to be completely contained other than when physical contact comes into consideration. When an object small enough to be annihilated by whatever she does to it comes in contact, there is a bit more data provided as her body first integrates the unfortunate thing, then consumes it rapidly. 'Only things not alive' she assures when such a demonstration is observed.

* * *

Beast nods, producing a variety of data for him to analyze. "Where? Do you know?" he asks, indicating if she knows the final desgination of the vanished objects. The juncture between light and sound energy, the different frequencies of which, all of that he works to compile. "All very interesting, although I'm not sure I'm close to a source," he mutters to himself mostly and then asks directly. "What do you want to learn?"

* * *

Ombra is quite co-operative, doing everything she can to accomodate the tests provided, the sort of test subject that stems from an honors student, and not at all uncomfortable regardless. The where has her shrugging. 'No idea everything just vanish' and then 'there is more but I can't show' and 'just need to believe' and then 'gun shoot heal fast' and 'so does cuts' and 'sledge hammer hurts' and 'maybe can't die'. She holds up a finger. There's more.

* * *

The more of it seems to involve a companion. Another shadow-creature, in the form of a housecat. It emerges from…Ombra? Ombra's shadow? And it takes a seat on the medical table at her side. 'Friend' Her hand rests on the feline. 'I can be this too'

* * *

Beast nods, "Regeneration not invulnerability. Interesting," he says. "I'm trying to see how much of a physical body you have - or if you are made up entirely of this shadow energy." he says, struggling a moment to find words to sign. At the emergence of the cat, he pushes up his goggles and offers a hand, "Greetings to you, then, friend."

* * *

The cat, apparently quite friendly leans up into the proffered hand, behaving exactly how one might expect an ideal housecat to behave. Like Ombra, not a sound. Silhouette. Unlike Ombra, the touch does not infect.
'Never cold' and 'never hungry' and 'can be cat'. There is a dismayed look about her. Then hope. Because she apparently 'still need breathe' Then less hopeful, 'no drowning yet'. More regarding how it hasn't yet happened than making a demand to delay that part of a test, which she is certain is not going to be a concern today. Hank can feel the cat purring. It seems all too happy to leap into arms.

* * *

Beast nods, "Don't want to make the tests just about what you can endure," he says. He feels that purring and considers it as it scampers around him. The cat does, indeed, seem to be a separate entity, not just a simple projection, although maybe he's reading too much into the behaviors. It is authentically catlike, however, which intrigues him.

"I can't promise it will be simple. Or fast. But we will get to the bottom of this."

* * *

'Same' Ombra concurs. 'Feel pain still' There's just a sense that mortal threats don't quite scare her. Not surprising to draw that line of thought really. 'want to learn' She just shrugs. It's hard for her to properly express what she does not already know. 'how not scare people' does finally come to her as a useful teaching idea. It's not entirely something she expects to be answered with ease.

* * *

Beast nods, "Not always something you can control. I know," he says, gesturing towards his own furry face, fangs in his smile. "Different but the same. Here, everyone is different. Safe," he says. "I think that will do for an initial exam. I will think of more tests to run in time."

* * *

'You smile and that inviting' Ombra points out. Her cat friend hops over to her lap, and is gone. At first, it might seem like it's just a silhouette against a background of another identically black silhouette, but it's really gone. 'no one sees me smile' then 'no hearing me laugh', and 'going deaf super scary so no touch'. She's shrunken again in posture, feeling very small, helpless. 'some friends'. A lot less helpless. 'more bullets than friends' Resignation, rather than dismay. 'does not stop me from try'

* * *

Beast will not comment on whether or not his lap is inviting. He sees the sorrow, though, and the concern, "It is very hard to be isolated," he says. "You will make friends here. Of that, I am very sure. Me, for a start," he says with a fanged smile.

* * *

Ombra seems to find that sad too, in a different way. 'You are friend' she affirms. 'everyone here friendly' and 'different from friend' She hops from the medical table to stand on the floor. 'Friend touch me without ask' and 'friendly still unsure' and 'only need time'. She is smiling, but it's hard to see. Even as she turns her head to show her lips' outline. 'Home elsewhere but here very nice visit' and 'Will visit again feeling welcome'.
