Sam Guthrie is out and about. He is driving an older jeep and has stopped at a local strip mall, stepping out of one of them with a application in hand. He seems out putting in the leg work, as he walks over to put it in a folder in the jeep.

* * *

It's a cold day, and the days are just getting moreso over time. It's early evening when a warmly and well-dressed blonde woman disembarks from the ride service she hired to reach the area. It's hardly her final travel destination, but it is a place she wanted to get to know before moving on. One wheeled suitcase is extracted from the trunk and she is given the opportunity to really take it all in. A few steps onto the sidewalk, her right hand dragging along the case of mysterious contents.
The blonde does not get more than ten steps before she discovers what happens when unsalted ice meets boots designed for their look rather than function. She falls, lands on her left side, gives a loud grunt of pain, and sets to moving herself off the icy spot using only her right arm and legs. It's a little slow going.

* * *

Sam Guthrie will start to move as he sees the woman falling. He will head over to her, and offers her his hand to help her up. "Need a hand there miss?" It seems he is a bit more used to this or at least has the right footwear, maybe both even.

* * *

The response of "No." is curt, and a little emphatic. She doesn't seem angry, rather, determined. She pushes herself off of the icy patch, supports herself with only her right arm to get into a kneeling position, then stands. Once sturdy and upright, she stoops to pick up the handle of her suitcase. "Thank you for asking. Both as courtesy and for not just stepping in." With her suitcase also upright and beside her, she wipes away the accumulated pebbles and salt that did make it to the general area.

* * *

Sam Guthrie looks to her a brow raised at the woman not taking the hand "Well if your not gonna let folks give ya a hand, may I suggest some better boots, if your gonna be out and about in this weather."

* * *

"I was not careful," the blonde admits. "Too eager to get walking. A little bruising will be a teacher enough now." She looks the young man over. "You are also far from home?" The last of the specks is brushed away and she stands fully erect. "I don't mean to be rude," she adds. "I was surprised by the fall."

* * *

Sam Guthrie nods, and says "Well a bit away from original home, but my second home is pretty much up around here. Most of the time places up here do a pretty good job at keeping the walks salted and such. You looking for something specific around here?

* * *

"Some several specifics around here," the blonde replies. "One should be found without much guidance. Simple lodgings, once I have gotten a sense of what is here." Momentarily she closes her eyes and listens. "Two would be a special academy, for the gifted. And three… I believe will take time." Her eyes open again. "I am forgetting myself already. Shameful. My name is Karin."

* * *

Sam Guthrie will start to say something as the woman speaks about the place to stay, but at the speak of the school, his brow will shoot up a bit "A school for gifted youngsters?" He will ask giving the woman a more through once over.

* * *

"How many such scholarly institutions are there here?" Karin wonders aloud, sounding genuinely curious rather than derisive. "That sounds correct. Is your expression one of incredulity or excitement?"

* * *

Sam Guthrie says, "Well, Ah might know the people who can help you out with the school, may Ah ask who sent ya to find the school?" He will says "Come have a seat and lets talk?" He will say heading to a food joint in the strip mall."

* * *

Karin glances at the ground as she walks, accompanying and watching for more frozen hazards. "So you are part of it," she surmises. "Or have a puzzling dedication to gatekeeping." As soon as her path is no longer in danger of finding more ice, she looks at her surroundings. "The school is known to me by word of mouth. Your name though, I am curious to know." She settles into one of the seats with her luggage leaning against the back of it.

* * *

Sam Guthrie hmms and says "Sam, Sam Gunthrie." He tells her his normal name, not his hero name. Now how about you tell me yours and who told you about the school?"

* * *

"Karin is my name," Karin says. "Though if you require more then Glucksburg is the remainder." Her head inclines as she considers how to answer. "I was fourteen when there was a message left for me," she replies. "An offer to learn. I didn't accept it." She tugs the fingers of her glove off one at a time with her teeth, very lightly touching them to avoid leaving saliva stains. Her hand rests on the glove as she sets that flat on the table. "Set a penny on the table and I will demonstrate why the message was sent."

* * *

Sam Guthrie will reach into hic pocket, and pulls out some change "Will a quarter do?" He asks as sets it on the table, looking her over.

* * *

Karin slides her hand and glove over to the quarter, touching it with her thumb, a light tap. The quarter becomes a mass of liquid for a moment, then solidifies almost immediately. "It's twenty-four cents more that is lost," she replies. She touches it again then, remaining in contact, and it changes into a tiny replica of Sam. "I suspect this is what I was to be taught then. I learned gradually."

* * *

Sam Guthrie hmms and says "I can get word to the right people who will contact you if you have a phone number we can contact you via." He will order a drink as the waitress comes over "Get something to drink and eat, it is on me."

* * *

"My friend," Karin gently says, "With no insult meant toward your hospitality, I must insist on the reverse of that proposal. Of payment I mean. I won't impose upon your secrecy, though if one were to delve, it would take little time to figure out where to show up. I respect discretion." She covers the tiny Sam Sculpture with her glove, then produces from where the statue went a rounded business card sized flat metal plate with a phone number embossed on it.

* * *

Sam Guthrie will take the card and says "Well, Ah am sure you know it is probably best to keep things through proper channles, Ah am not sure how long it will take, but Ah will do my best. So, if Ah may ask, what has you looking for us now?"

* * *

"It will not be long now before we must make a choice," Karin replies when she is certain there will be no overhearing her. "To fight, or to be locked away. The registration is an act. A farce. It will become worse. Men in power fear losing it. Registered, means findable."

* * *

Sam Guthrie 's brow raises a bit and says "We fight to get the laws changed, to show what the law should be, and what it needs be. What type of fighting are you thinking?"

* * *

"And when it is illegal just to be, how do you show what should be?" Karin wonders. "I will not choose to become silenced. I would hope you do not either. Nor anyone you are evaluating me in the name of now."

* * *

Sam Guthrie says, "When you showing how things have to be fixed you sometime have to do it without people knowing it is you, but the right things must be done, if the wrong ones are done, it would make things worse."

* * *

"So you cannot say who you are, when you do these right things," Karin surmises. "The trouble with anonymity, is that it can be anyone. Were I someone interested in silencing your right way voice, I would mask one of my own in anonymity, and do the wrong ones." Karin stands then, pulling the glove back on with her teeth. "I will trouble you no further, Mr. Guthrie. I hope only that you are more prepared for the worst of what is to come than you seem."

* * *

Sam Guthrie looks to her, and says "I will still pass the word on to the others at the school let you talk to them, and make sure it is not just my opinion your disagreeing with

* * *

Karin bobs her head. "I wonder how different I would be were I to have accepted that invite," she muses. "I will remain here for a week. Fewer if none elect to speak with me by three days. And I will do my best to avoid making unseemly messes." She looks thoughtful. "Are the fear-mongers here very aggressive or outspoken?"

* * *

Sam Guthrie says, "Not the last time Ah was here, but Ah have been away till Ah returned recently."

* * *

"I'm sure I can busy myself with learning about incidents from the locals," Karin says. "Thank you for your time, Mr. Guthrie. I am certain it is valuable right now. Which of these establishments do you hope will be the one to hire you?"

* * *

Sam Guthrie shrugs and says "Not sure, thinking probably hoping for bartender or delivery guy would be the best bet.

* * *

"I wish a long and happy working relationship for whomever takes you in," Karin bids, paying at the front for the table and then moving on, out of the eatery to zero in on accomodations.
There are phone calls to make, and several days in which to make them.
