Luke had to make an appointment to see Bart. An appointment. Still he wanted to check in on the kid, and so he dressed up for the occasion which means clean jeans and a black button down shirt beneath his leather motorcycle jacket. At least there aren't any bullet holes? He checks in with someone at a desk, an envelope being bounced against his wide palm as he waits, too restless to take a seat or accept a Stark branded bottle of water while he does so.

What's his world come to, where his friends make appointments to visit? Bart had a double-take when he'd seen the name, and then everything leading up to the promised timeframe had felt very much like waiting for those final minutes to tick on towards the bell at school. He hadn't even considered the why's of it, or hadn't allowed himself to, so much as that he knew a talk with his former boss was very much overdue.

Finally Luke is informed that he can go in, and hopefully it hasn't felt as long for him as it has for a speedster-turned-business owner.

He'll find Bart inside the fancy office sitting- no, standing now- behind the big fancy desk. He looks like someone playing at being someone important, and even though he wears a suit he's got a hooded sweatshirt under his blazer, and if Luke were to guess, probably wearing sneakers too.

* * *

Bart is greeted by a wide, warm smile as Luke steps into the kid's office, politely but firmly informing the assistant that they are fine. Don't need tea. Don't need water. WE'RE FINE. Before closing the door behind him with a sigh of something like relief.

It's then he takes a minute to look around, giving a low whistle. "Pays to be the boss, huh? Though I could probably fit my entire apartment into your executive bathroom. How ya been, Bart?" This all said as he eats up the ground between them with his long strides, holding out a hand not for a shake but to draw him into a warm fatherly like embrace.

* * *

If the desk weren't so wide Luke would get the impression that Bart would've tried vaulting over it in his eagerness to greet his visitor. He's glad Luke's taken care of the door, his smile bright as he comes around to intercept the other for that hug.

"Oh man, it's ridiculous, right? And kinda pointless because there's so much space and not enough stuff filling it! But boy am I glad to see you!"

Greetings dispatched, Bart steps back a bit, his smile replaced by an apologetic look. "I am so sorry I hadda get fired, Luke- I really wanted to stay and help but Owen said I couldn't even do voluntary assistance!"

* * *

Luke gives a low roll of laughter as he ends the hug with a hearty pat on the shoulder. "And you can't beat the view." Comes the last compliment about the office before they start talking about the bar. "Hate to say it, but Owen is right once in a while, and definitely in this case. Last thing you need is the press talking about how you're slumming it up in Harlem. But that reminds me," Luke hands over the envelope. "Your final paycheck. I guess I could've mailed it, but I wanted the excuse to come and see you."

* * *

"It is a pretty great view," Bart has to agree. He sighs as he has to concede the point about Owen, nodding glumly. Not about the fact that now and then his half-brother can be right.

"Yeah, I know. I thought about it more after he fired me. And I'm still sad about it, but I can still come see you guys."

He glances down at the envelope he's handed, blinking. "Aw, Luke." All smiles again, he slips it into a pocket. "Thanks for coming by. It's always good seeing you. So how's stuff been?"

* * *

"Yeah well," Luke gives a sheepish sort of mop of his bald head as he turns towards one of the client chairs. "I'm sure it's just a drop in the bucket compared to your salary here, but gotta give the man he's due." He turns and sits gently into the piece of furniture, making sure it will hold his weight before he settles all of it. "I'm good, I'm good. Caught up in my own particular hell with this Registration business, but Jess and Matt are doing their best to make sure I don't get bounced back to Seagate. You know, I haven't been back to the tower here since Jess was…you know." Here, in her coma.

* * *

"I still feel like I've actually earned this though, so it still means more. To me at least." Bart pats the pocket with the envelope.

As Luke takes a seat, the speedster turns and hops up to sit at the edge of the ginormous desk. "That's good. Well, except for the registration stuff, but that's the hot topic of the day, isn't it?" He makes a bit of a face. "Part of the reason I suddenly own Stark Industries, I guess." He sighs again, shoulders sagging. "But hey, that's great. They're some of the best people to have behind you for this, right?" His smile sobers as he glances towards the doors, as though he can see the medical ward even though it's on a different floor.

"Those were some crazy times, huh? It's a whole lot weirder having to come here almost every day and be expected to actually do some kind of work… thing."

* * *

Luke stretches out his long legs towards the desk, making himself comfortable as his hands fold atop his stomach. "Crazy times indeed. So is that the reason Tony gave you for handing over the empire? Registration? Because it's not like he wanted to put a non-meta as the face of the business. Because, well…" He gives a little hitch of his chin to indicate the speedster perched on top of the desk. "And what is it you do anyways?"

* * *

"Pretty much." Bart frowns a little as he thinks back to that day Tony had called him over to discuss this 'master plan' of his. "He didn't want people going after the company because of the whole registration stuff, especially if he's registered. And since there were already rumors about me being his ward- it was like, one party I went to with him and the internet explodes—" he huffs. "-so yeah."

His feet kick back and forth- yep, totally wearing sneakers there, and he smiles lopsidedly as Luke asks what he does. "Mostly sit in boring meetings. Mister Stark warned me of that much before I signed on. Miss Potts is still here and mostly the one running things otherwise, thankfully."

* * *

"So you're the new face." Luke says with a grin, a shake of his head at the incredulity of the situation. "That plan sounds all well and good, but what happens if you get outted and not having registered? I mean, wouldn't it be better for Tony just to Register and keep the company, then risk losing it if your secret comes out after taking over?" Cage is really trying to connect the dots here, and failing.

* * *

Bart shakes his head. "Tony's already gone public about registering. I think it was kind of expected of him. Setting him as the 'poster child' for this whole reg business." He makes with the air quotes as he recalls the conversation they'd all had at the X-Mansion with Tony's old friend.

"This way, he sets himself apart from Stark Industries and the company won't get affected by the law stuff, and meanwhile he's setting up shop in Metropolis with a new business." He smiles briefly, giving a small nod. The possibility of his own possession of superhuman abilities coming to light is also a big thing he's had to keep in mind.

"For now- and hopefully for good, they won't find out the truth about me. Either way, I'm an unknown factor so people are either confused or figuring they can take advantage of me and finding out the hard way they still have to deal with Miss Potts." He grins a bit once again.

* * *

Luke has to grimace at the thought of Bart defying the law, having been advised about doing the same by Nelson & Murdock because of the consequences. "So he's moving his own interests outside of New York and the reach of Registration, and leaving the legacy company to you and Pepper. I guess that makes sense, but I gotta ask, man. Did you want any of this?" Or did Tony just strong arm him into the position by being, well, Tony.

* * *

It's a serious enough matter that even Bart knows he should consider how to answer before saying anything. He folds his arms, looking pensively at the floor and its likely expensive carpeting.

"I didn't really," he admits. "But I'm not sure how anything is going to pan out. We've already decided to take ourselves underground with the team. But maybe from this angle I can help in other ways, just by seeing how things go."

And technically he's not a resident of New York so….okay, he and Tony are probably poking into too many loopholes but Bart actually trusts the man knows what he's doing.

* * *

"Uh-huh." Luke says dryly, a thread of displeasure making itself known in his tone, "I just hope Stark didn't paint a giant target on your back by putting you into a position you might not be ready for. Look, it's not my place to judge, so I'm not going to. Just remember you have friends all over New York if you ever need to call on them. Harlem in particular."

* * *

"..yeah, I know." The warning isn't something Bart hasn't already heard in some form or another. But there seems little to be done about it now, and he means to do his best and keep on his guard.

He manages not to sigh again, and he can understand Luke's wariness about the whole matter. Quietly he raises his head and looks over at his friend and former boss, nodding. "Thanks Luke," he says. "Not that I don't know it, but it's always good to hear."

* * *

Luke pulls his feet back underneath him, standing up from the cradle of the chair and reaching out to pat Bart more sympathetically on his shoulder. "Heavy is the head that wears the crown, kiddo. Hopefully you'll get some enjoyment out of suddenly being in charge of a billion dollar corporation, but I swear if you turn into some snobby party boy, I'll come back here and whoop you like your momma would." The threat is light however, as it's delivered with a giant grin.

* * *

The grimace from the speedster isn't from the pat on the shoulder so much as the playful threat. Bart grins wryly at Luke, and once the man removes his hand, he slips down from the desk. After some hesitation, he wraps his arms around for one more hug.

"If that ever happens I'll let you be first in line," he laughs. The last thing he wants is for this sudden shift of lifestyle to change him so drastically. But he's got plenty of friends that he knows won't steer him wrong.

"Thanks for coming by, Luke. You're always welcome."

* * *

Luke is all too happy to return that hug, lifting Bart slightly with the bro embrace before setting him back to his feet. "I'll take you up on that, man. Especially if Stark left behind his good scotch." And with one last lingering look around the office, and a shake of his head, the big man is off.

* * *

Bart laughs. "You'll have to fight Owen for it," he predicts, and as the man turns to take his leave, the smaller of the two waves after him.

He sucks in a deep breath once Luke has departed, expelling it in a more relaxed sigh as he stretches his arms out over his head. It wasn't a long visit, but it had been a welcome one all the same.
