It's a pleasant morning for once. Overcast but already sixty degrees, it seems like an ideal sort of day to begin a(nother) new life. The pieces are beginning to come together and it is high time that Quake's lifestyle changed to fit the shifting tides. The only real difference is that this time around she isn't doing it alone.

Having a Spider on hand makes moving so much easier!

Parked in a nearby alley is the 'upgrade' to their apartment. It's a rusting powder blue 1983 GMC conversion van. Hardly a looker, that's for certain. Though it fits all of her criteria and it was priced to move faster than its own top speed.

"Don't judge," she warns while awkwardly shifting a stack of boxes around in her arms. "My only regret after moving here was selling my last van. Needed the money."

***

Gwen has to remind herself to take boxes down one at a time. It wouldn't do for a girl who weighs a buck twenty to haul down as many boxes as she could actually carry; it would attract attention. Still, she's tireless about getting up and down the stairs with them, and can carry whatever she wants as long as the box is closed so no one can see how heavy its contents would be, so that speeds things up a goodly bit.

"Judgment-free zone," Gwen agrees airily. She shoves her box in, then takes a few off Daisy's hands and stacks them as well. "What was the money for? Your gaming rig?"

***

It's cool, no one else has to know how heavy some of those individual boxes are! Daisy knows. More or less. Even then she's getting way more winded than Gwen is.

"The apartment..actually, but good guess. My last van was getting a little cramped. Because of the gaming rig," is admitted with a sheepish nod while neatly flicking the last box inside. "That and I -really- wanted my own bathroom. I'm gonna try to keep this as a temporary measure. You can still come back here, just..be extra careful, okay? I don't want to give anyone a reason to be snooping around up there or to start going after you."

***

Gwen's own stuff isn't in a box. It's in a bag. It's scavenged clothing, most of which she's left behind as no longer useful now that winter has passed; and some toiletries. She leads a glamorous life. "If I have to," she says reluctantly, "but it feels like even more of a risk to do while you're gone. I'll just have to be careful in new ways, is all." She looks wistfully up at the building. "Not that I won't miss this place, but…"

***

"We'll be back," Quake promises while looking back up at the building as well with hands falling onto hips. "I'm still going to be paying the rent for it. SHIELD already knows about the place and the alias I'm renting it under. This time it's more about living in the shadows for a while rather than moving to another state."

A quick look back to Gwen has her reaching out to rest a hand upon her shoulder. "C'mon in, we've got some things to talk about." And with that she leads the way, hopping into the back of the aged van and pushing boxes around so there's somewhere to sit.

***

Gwen notes that Daisy has hopped into the back rather than the front, which means the discussion is too serious to be had even while driving. She puts on her game face and steps in, closing the doors behind her. "Alright, I'm listening," she promises.

***

Out comes Quake's phone, automatically poking at the screen as she begins. "This is gonna be -way- harder than I had anticipated. They're keeping the server on Governors Island. While the place is accessible for tourists the ferrys don't start until next month, if we bump into anyone it's gonna be a real hard sell."

First she pulls up a map of the island and scoots closer to Gwen so she can point out the main attractions. It's been a long time since she's been in her element but she wears it like a familiar old jacket.

"The server's located somewhere inside of Fort Jay over here. The building's being modernized but the original structure are these four long skinny buildings making up a square. I've been tracking the power grid and the hot spot seems to be coming from here. A big server will require a lot of juice, this is probably where we're gonna find it."

Next she points to the very edge of the island.

"Ventilation building for the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel. There's two more in Manhattan and one more in Brooklyn. I'm bringing Jen in on this and I'm -hoping- that she can help get us across the water but if we have any trouble or need a Plan B out of here? We need to go through this building. There's automated toll cameras on the Manhattan side but not on the Brooklyn side, exiting with traffic isn't ideal but this is every option on the table."

***

Gwen scoots closer to Daisy, shoulder to shoulder now as they both look at the phone. "It's not every option," she admits reluctantly. "I'm not the greatest at sneaking into places, but I'm flexible, I can get through vents most people can't, I can get TO the vents in the first place. I can web up and break cameras if I have to. I'm not saying any of that is the best idea, but I have talents if you want to use them." She pauses. "That said, changing plans can ruin a person's confidence and make things worse even if the options the change brings are better, so whatever you choose to do, I support you."

***

Here Quake hesitates and turns those charcoal black masked eyes toward Gwen. "G, I am -absolutely- relying on you for this. I'm just outlying the basics so far. Believe me, I had already considered how far you might be able to web-sling all three of us but I'm willing to bet you can't hit eight hundred yards across open water with no tall structures to rappel onto." There's a seriousness to her words but a warm smile to her expression.

"That's also too far for commercial drones. At least any of the ones in my price range."

Then she reaches into a pocket on her biker jacket. "Where -you- are going to shine…" she grins with a mischievous upward twitch of her brows, "is with this." In her fingertips is a small but plain looking USB drive. "This is our masterkey. Find their server, plug it in, and I will have remote access so long as my butt is somewhere on the island with a laptop."

***

Gwen accepts the thumb drive wordlessly and nods. She's busy thinking about the chances of webslinging across that much water. Maybe if there was a helicopter overhead; but the added weight of two girls would definitely throw off the grace necessary to be stealthy…

"Yeah, water's a weakness for me," she agrees. "Okay. So I get to the place, I plug in the goober, and then? Do I get out of there, or do I need to stay on site to remove it?"

***

Quake grins slightly at 'plug in the goober.' "Best case scenario, you'd stick around long enough to take this with you. The fewer traces we leave, the better. I won't say it's the end of the world if we lose that drive but I'd really prefer not to. Maybe you can ..hang out on the ceiling or something, I don't know," she gently shrugs. "But how you handle that part of the plan is all on you, girl."

"Jen's kind of our wildcard in all of this. She can create temporary objects out of thin air. Not even kidding. Originally I thought she could form a lighter and trip the fire alarms to get everyone out of the building but that was when I still envisioned it as being in the middle of midtown. Now I'm kiiinda hoping..that..she can make us a boat..?" Quake hesitantly trails off in an upward pitched tone. "Failing that, wear your running shoes because that tunnel is -pretty- long… But anyway, Jen's our mobile resource department. If you need a thing she can probably make you the thing."

***

Gwen nods slowly. "Okay. And do we need a diversion? Because I might be able to talk Kara into making a distraction. She could make a big one."

***

Quake's eyes widen as she leans forward. "Kara—as in Supergirl? That's..like..bringing the world's biggest sledgehammer to a midnight waltz, G. Listen. I'm -praying- that we can do all of this without arousing any suspicion. No one gets seen, no one gets hurt, and no lasting damage done. If we need a distraction -that- big then we've really gone off the rails."

She turns back to her phone, swiping the screen and bringing up another app. "Potential security guards aside, they have -one- electronic security expert on site. His knowledge is good but a little behind the curve, which..is why it was so easy to hack his phone with stalkerware," she openly admits with an innocent expression. "We can keep fairly accurate tabs on him so we should know when he's coming."

***

Gwen, who routinely kicks people in the face to discourage crime, has no particular scruples about hacking a bad guy's phone. She lets it pass uncommented. "And he's in and out of that room a lot, then?"

***

The corner of a lip gets caught between Quake's teeth for a second. "Not..being able to -completely- pinpoint where the server is..I'm not entirely sure. It's anyone's guess. The server is completely offline so any data entry for new registrations would have to be done in person. I don't know if that's done by him, my suspicion is that it's not. We'll have to play that by ear."

"The upshot here is that we're going in at night so there probably won't be any server activity taking place. If we're really lucky he won't be on the night shift when we go in."

***

Gwen nods. "Sure, I've flown by the seat of my pants once before. Turned out alright," she deadpans. "And anyway, if he is on duty… well, I'd hate to have to web him up, but it's always an option."

***

Another light smile comes from Quake. "Unfortunately, as amazing as I am, there are some things which even I can't do. We'll have to make up a lot of this as we go but you're good at thinking on your feet. Or..from the end of a webline…" she dismissively waves a hand. "Point is, I have faith in you."

Her phone gets set aside as she turns more directly to Gwen. "Speaking of…" Both of her hands come to rest atop of both of the Spider's hands while looking directly at her.

"I like Jen, but she's…" Quake glances downward for a second, "she can be a little gung-ho. She's young, has a rough background, and has a -really powerful- ability of which she has only barely started to understand. If something happens and we can't talk her down..you're the only one who has a chance of stopping her."

"As it is I need to avoid causing any tremors. SHIELD knows about that trick, they'll know I was behind this if they get any seismic readings from the area."

***

Gwen's hands turn upside down like to play the slapping game she and her dad played, but instead of testing her reflexes, she just squeezes Daisy's hands. "I understand. So she's with me once I get inside?"

***

A look of uncertainty comes next before Quake admits "I don't really know. Probably..? But I don't really know. You're both better at being sneaky than I am, figured I would camp out atop of the vent tower. Should get a really clear signal from there, though I kinda feel like I'll be throwing you both into the dangerous stuff while I sit on the sidelines…"

"I know there's a lot of risk here but you -both- insisted on coming along so we're in this complicated mess together." She nods a few times. "We'll find a way."

***

"Damn right I did," Gwen avers, smiling at Daisy. "If there's anything I can help you with, then I want to help. Simple as that." Still gripping Daisy's hands, she swings her arms a bit childishly from side to side. The impending danger of the infiltration doesn't seem to be getting to her. "But if I had my way, Jen would stay with you. If you're non-powered for this mission, then the two teams should have one powered person each."

***

Another smile is given in return. "Because you are a stubborn little spider."

Gwen's suggestion is considered, bringing another nod from Quake. "I don't disagree with the idea, but she probably won't have much to do hanging out with me and I don't want her getting too bored. If I'm on my own I should be safe, no one will think to look atop of the vent tower. One of you can get me to and from it. Failing that, we'll all be working close together."

"In fact..if we're all sticking together then I'll need both of your help making sure I'm not spotted. I'm -probably- our weakest link in the 'staying hidden' category. Usually I do everything online. Completely different stealth tactics," she says with an impish smirk.

"Just warn me before you do something crazy like hang -me- from the ceiling, I don't want to drop my system."

***

Gwen laughs. "Nah, I don't want you to have to learn to type upside-down. And I guess if you're worried about her flying off the handle, the best place to do it is with me," she agrees more soberly. "We'll hash out who's where when we talk with Jen."

***

Another nod and smile from the shadowed Quake. "When this is done we'll take an extended tour of Metropolis, away from the Registration mess." And whatever remains of SHIELD… "I can't think of a better city to lay low in. Oh hey, maybe we can see about visiting your home dimension for a while!"

***

Gwen smiles and nods. "We could," she agrees. "I don't know how much I care about you seeing my worldit's kinda seen one world, seen 'em all, you know?but I'd love to introduce you to my dad." She's still blushing a little at the thought.

***

"Heeey, now…" Quake turns her head partway to one side while staring at Gwen. A hand comes up to lightly brush over one of her pinkish cheeks. "You were allll excited to show me where you came from before. Don't think I forgot about it. And c'mon, who -wouldn't- want to say they've been to another dimension! Do they have pizza where you came from? We can -totally- pig out on other dimension pizza."

***

Gwen smiles, but isn't distracted. "I guess I've figured out it's not the place that matters, it's the people. It's not my home because it's where I'm from, it's my home because it's who I'm from. You know?"

***

Something about what Gwen says here has Quake feeling a bit melancholy. Like the wind is pulled right out of her sails. It's enough to have her break off eye contact, looking down toward the van's floor. "Yeah… I understand."

***

Gwen looks at Daisy for a moment, and says conversationally, "I kind of think worrying about my past is selfish. I mean, it really only matters to me, you know? The rest of the world just cares the kind of person I am, not how I got to be here." She rests her hand on Daisy's knee. "Sort of like you, Skye. I'll never know the person you were or the person you might have been, just the one you are."
