Ulaanbaatar may be an ancient city, but it's also a thoroughly modern place, with all that brings with it. And Danny and Colleen have seen a lot of it over the past few days as they've gone all around the city in search of Bakuto. Along the way, they got into a few scrapes, in particular with a gang of nomads who run drugs and arms on a route between China and Russia. They were lucky to escape without serious injury, though no closer to finding the man they came for.

Overnight, a message is delivered to their hotel, slipped under the door by either another guest or hotel staff. The message is in Japanese, and etched with Bakuto's personal sigil. This was clearly a message meant for Colleen. On it are the words, 'He crossed the wrong swords' and an address near where they crossed paths with the gang members the other day.

"Pretty high probability this is a trap, right?" says Danny as they wind through narrow alleyways and past market stalls en route to the address on the paper.

**

"He crossed the wrong swords," she had aloud when she opened the letter, and something about those words chill her belly. By that point and on, Colleen's expression has tightened into that serious and impassable face of a Sensei. Danny has seen it before — stone, hard, and statuesque.

She looks toward Danny, and then she starts to nod in a quick, simple motion. "Very high. Which means he has noticed that we've been on the streets together." Why would that be a bad thing? "We will have to be careful."

**

"What does that mean? Is it code? The name of a gang?" Danny looks down at a printed map, then up at the street signs to navigate their way towards the spot on the note. "There's definitely a lot of organizations and gangs with swords in their name." He leads them past a narrow pedestrian street, then stops and doubles back. He looks down at the map, then up, then over at Colleen. "That's…an entrance that's easy to protect and hard to retreat down." He may have a reputation for being a bit of a derp, but he's been trained in tactics since he was a kid.

**

Her mouth settles into a harder line as she looks up at Danny. "I don't know." Which isn't entirely true — she has suspicions at least. "I think that it means someone misstepped — perhaps even I misstepped." Which is far more likely. She glances at Danny, but before their eyes can meet, she's looking away and adjusting the slender tube across her back. Then Danny is doubling back and she trails with him. She glances back toward Danny at his observation before her eyes settle more seriously at their destination. "Any sign of an alternative entrance?"

**

Danny examines the alleyway with a frown. Then, he ventures forward, and reaches out to feel the brick wall. He manages to find a handhold, then a foothold. It's only about a six foot climb to get up onto the low, slightly tilted roofs that border the alleyway. He scrambles up, surprisingly agile for his height, foot slipping only a little until he's made it up. Once up, he lies down and reaches down to help pull her up if she needs it. "Alternative enough for you?" he asks as he grins down.

**

Colleen holds onto that serious expression long enough to watch Danny scramble up the wall, and she's nearing it so she can tilt her head back into that grin. She narrows her eyes at him, though there's a little micro twitch at the corner of her lips that is a smile; she scoffs through it, as if she doesn't want him to see it. Then she is adjusting the strap of her katana, and she is starting up herself. Once, Colleen would have taken an extra amount of effort to avoid taking Danny's assistance, but now, she easily takes his hand and uses their combined leverage to get to the roof. She lingers there near him before she steps aside a bit, looking over the tilted roof. Then she puts her finger to her lips and starts to slip past to take lead across the wall, staying low.

**

The micro-twitch provokes a bigger grin from Danny, outsized in comparison but just the right fit for their respective personalities. He falls into step behind her - steps that are careful and light on the metal sheets that serve as roofing.

The alley narrows even further up ahead - almost a perfect funnel. It opens into a small courtyard that isn't on any maps. There's a wooden door, and footsteps in the dirt. There's also two men in dark clothing standing by the door. They're buff and wear military-style fatigues, but with no identifying marks.

They can make their way along the buildings if they're careful, to a gap in the roof above that door being guarded. There are voice inside. They may be speaking Mongolian, or another dialect that sounds similar - but it's not a language either of them speak.

**

Colleen glances twice over her shoulder as they move, checking to make sure Danny is close behind. Then, as they near the funnel, her focus rapt entirely on their destination and the sudden appearance of the courtyard. She drops low at this edge into a squat so she can observe the courtyard and then the door. And then the guards. Her eyes drift a moment between the two dark-clad men and Danny. Then she's moving again, following the path to the space above the door, mindful of shadows. Her ears almost lean toward the voices, and she frowns deeper. Her eyes flick to Danny questioningly.

**

Yeah. It's not good. Danny's tight frown communicates his own feelings on the situation. He follows behind, following her lead and stepping lightly. He and Matt Murdock might have a lot in common (including, as they discovered a few months ago, a common root to their training) but he's never been against following someone else's lead.

It doesn't take very long to see the person they've come for. Bakuto is bound to a chair, his head lolled forward. He's hooked up to an IV, and one of his arms is…removing his blood? Very strange. He looks rough. His dirty clothes tell the story of how long he's been in captivity.

Men move below. Shadows. There's two of them, and two at the door.

**

Now the warning on the paper makes sense. Her chin lowers slightly as she regards the sight of her Sensei. She turns a glance toward Danny once before she starts to edge closer to where she can see Bakuto. Then she turns toward Danny, and she reverses her course to murmur to him in the lowest whisper she can manage. "Opposite corners?" She points to the other side of where they are so that she will be at one corner, him at the other.

**

"I could punch through the roof and put myself between him and then men. Throw them off-balance. You come in behind me and take them out?" Danny murmurs back speaking likewise in a hushed tone.

**

His suggestion is better, and she nods. "Yes." Then her lips twitch. "Be noisy. I'll come in quiet." Then she squeezes his arm gently before she slips back, giving him space on the roof. She reaches over her shoulder, and gently begins to slip the katana from its hard sheath silently, taking her time so there's no shush of metal to be heard.

**

Danny still sometimes has trouble igniting the fist. But here, in this situation when the purpose is clear? The veins along his arm start to emit a soft yellow glow, until his entire hand is bathed in yellow. He doesn't hesitate once it's ignited, lest that light draw attention.

He sprints forward, jumps from one roof to the other, then slams downwards. He has to hit it with a minimal amount of power to actually transfer the energy to the panel around him. If he used too much, his fist would punch through the metal like a wet paper towel.

No one really understands how much control he exercises, how devastating the Fist can be if he doesn't moderate it. In many ways, punching someone to break their nose is far harder than punching them to take their head off.

As it is, he manages to loose the whole panel, and drop him down into the room just in front of Bakuto. There's a lot of shouting and cursing and the sound of guns being cocked. He swings his fist around and punches the gun nearest him, turning it into a crumpled heap and shattering bones in the man's hand.

**

Maybe once Danny ignited that fist all the time, but seeing it as a rarity, Colleen is stalled a moment by the sight of its full power flooding his veins. While she takes him in, her body is working on muscle memories and instinct. She's starting forward after Danny, her feet light and soft on the roof in her sneakers.

Danny makes all the noise she had hoped, and so Colleen drops into the room very quietly. She lands softly behind a second man, and she takes a debilitating slice at his back legs, dropping him to a knee only to slam her elbow hard into the back of his head now that he's in a better range.

**

Both men crumple due to the combination of their training and the element of surprise. The other two men rush into the room and fumble for their weapons. But they lose precious seconds doing that, and Danny rushes forward to grab one of their wrists. He twists it in such a way that he drops the gun involuntarily, which he kicks out of the way. The weapon skids under a shipping container. He then delivers an uppercut to the man's jaw.

The guys are beefy, but they're not trained fighters. They may be guarding a prone Bakuto, but there's no way they could have captured a man of his skill without help.

**

Colleen whips her head around with a sharp movement of dark hair as she brings her weapon up with that glint off the steel blade. Then she's moving fast toward the second man, staying low and nimble to evade any attack incoming. She strikes her weapon down at the thug's dominant arm in a swift, sharp motion before she aims to hobble him the same way that she had done with the first, this time across the knee to detach the tendons there.

**

It's all over in a manner of minutes. The men are lying prone and injured, and no immedate threat to anyone. Danny stands ready, watching the door, fist still glowing.

Bakuto is unconscious. He's pale, bruised, and there's evidence of several needle marks along his arm. However, he hasn't been lashed to the chair for long, given the absence of bruising at his wrists. His knuckles are red and blistered, suggesting he swung more than a few punches before they captured him.

"Let's get him out of here," says Danny. "I still don't like being boxed in at the end of this alleyway if backup comes."

Colleen looks around at the bodies — all alive, though whether or not those wounds will result in lasting injuries is debatable. Her dark eyes sweep around quickly for other attackers before she's sheathing her weapon and stepping quickly for Bakuto. "Sensei," she says quietly. "I'm here." He cannot hear her, but she says it anyway. She starts to work his bindings and then removes the IV. She looks over his wounds and then her eyes flicker up to Danny.

"I hope he can tell us who attacked him," she says, not masking the worry in her voice. With the two helping each other, they get Bakuto out of the alley and into the streets to take him back to the hotel where they can see to his wounds.
