At a rally last night, Senator Robert Kelly (R-NY) became the latest to announce his candidacy for the 2020 presidential election.

While Senator Kelly has long run on a platform that focuses primarily upon smaller government, fiscal responsibility, and national security, he has been recently challenged on that platform.

Often seen as a polarizing figure, Senator Kelly has a very strong and vocal local voter base and national following. Opponents have called into question the consistency of his platform, however. He has voiced unwavering support for anti-metahuman policies in New York — policies that that have both expanded the state government with the creation of the Department of Public Safety (DPS) and increased public spending following the mass incarceration of metahumans who failed to comply with registration mandated by the Metahuman Registration and Public Safety Act (MRPSA) that went into effect in New York earlier this year.

Anti-MRPSA opinions have highlighted how the state legislation disproportionately impacts the mutant community, and MRPSA is presently under legal challenge.

Despite the uncertain future of MRPSA, comments made by Sen. Kelly during his announcement speech seem to indicate that he intends to run on a platform consistent with his tenure as senator. He spent several minutes making disparaging remarks about the current administration and its "inability to make the tough decisions about national security."

He went on, saying, "What this country needs is someone able to make those hard decisions and identify those threats hiding within our own borders. We need to continue to be a world leader, showing our global neighbors how to successfully run a national registration effort for the increasingly prominent metahuman community."

Sen. Kelly has not yet announced a choice for a running mate.
