Jessi Jandrey

About

Jessi Jandrey (born Jessica Chapman, November 23, 1996) is an American actress, singer and songwriter. After taking smaller parts in the made-for-TV 2011 movie Crunchtime and the 2011 after school special "Elite Girls," she accepted the role of fictional fashion detective Mika Sterling, titular character of the popular 2013 Gotham Broadcasting Company series of the same name. The GBC series ran for four seasons, ending in 2016. Jessi has reprised her role twice, for the 2014 network special "Mika and Risky," as well as the feature length movie "Mika Sterling and the Case of the Ghost Queen 13," released in theaters on November 23rd, 2015. Since then, Jandrey has released two albums, "Beyond the Case" in 2017 and "This is Jessi" in 2018. She is currently the star of GBC's monthly online streaming show, "Jamming with Jessi," which was recently placed on hiatus in May 2019.

Personal History

Career in music

Jessi has released two studio albums, four singles and seven music videos. She began performing in Mika Sterling's third season, coinciding with a new creative direction for the series. In the fictional series, title character Mika Sterling set aside her job as an elite teen fashion detective to become a pop superstar. This direction was noted by reviewers the Gotham Gazette to have "directly contributed to the character's larger than life persona, and the actress' consequent investiture as one of the unsung titans of Gotham's pop culture, a true teen idol in every sense of the word."

Starting with the fourth episode of the third season, each episode of Mika Sterling had its own original song written. Jessi's music was popularized by strong rotation in Gotham radio shortly following every episode in accordance with a promotion deal between local radio stations and GBC. Landrey's performance of "I Can Do Whatever I Feel," the signature song of season 4's episode 7 "Nothing More Than," reached number 57 in the Billboard Hot 100 in 2016, and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Song Written For Visual Media.

The songs in Mika Sterling were later released in two 2016 compilations, "Mika Sterling" and "Mika Sterling: Shining Bright." However, because of rights disputes between her management team and GBC, they were not credited to Jandrey. The songs in Mika Sterling were written by Bill and Stan Allweiss, the producers behind the show, and though she performed 23 of the 26 songs between the two compilations, two tracks, "Risky Company" and "You Think You're Tough" were performed by her Sterling co-star Azia Lee. An additional track was an instrumental reprise of an earlier Jandrey performance.

Later in 2017, Jandrey recorded "Beyond the Case" as her debut studio album under Gotham Records, said to be her breakout musical debut. Her singles "Dump This" and "Ideations" both placed in the Billboard Top 50 for eight weeks straight into 2018. Her second album, "This is Jessi" released on June 2018. Selling 200,000 copies in the first month of release, it was certified RIAA Platinum status in December 2019. Jandrey promoted the album with a 10 stop tour along the east coast of the United States. Her first single from that album, "Not Just a Pair Of…" reached #16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and held the position for four weeks as well.
